FAQ - AmberThe Amber MPEG2 archiving and mastering kit provides the DV videographer a high quality, efficient way of storing DV productions for mastering and distribution. By using I, B, and P frames (MP@ML) the producer can be assured of high quality at a low data rate. Quality levels can be set ranging from 1Mb/s to 15Mb/s. With variable and constant bit rate options the user can adjust bandwidth depending on the complexity in the video. Stereo audio can also be captured into Layer II formats up to 48khz at 16 bits. Amber Questions Q: Is the 50-pin connector on the top of Amber a SCSI connector? A: NO. The 50-pin connector is NOT a SCSI connection! Q: How do I play video from DVRex-M1 and capture with Amber at the same time? A: In the RexVideo Settings menu, un-check "Release overlay when inactive" and in the View menu, select "Stop Overlay". Now you can play video from RexVideo and capture using Amber without RexVideo being interrupted. Q: How many minutes of video can I store on n GB? A: This is a question without a real answer. The amount of video you can store as MPEG-2 really depends on what audio and video bitrate you are encoding at, and whether you are using Constant Bitrate (CBR) or Variable Bitrate (VBR) for the video.
To get a more accurate calculation, use the following formula:
Remember that 1 KB = 1024 bytes, 1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes, and 1 GB = 1,073,741,428 bytes. For example, for 1 GB (1,073,741,824 bytes) of storage space, at 4 Mbps (4,000,000 bits/sec) video and 224 Kbps (224,000 bits/sec) audio:
DVD-RAM Questions Q: Why is there both a CD-ROM icon and a Removable disk icon for the drive? A: When a DVD-RAM or PD cartridge is in the DVD-RAM drive, use the Removable disk icon to access it. You can both read and write to it. When read-only media (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, etc) is in the DVD-RAM drive, use the CD-ROM icon to access it. You can only read from it. Q: Can I take the disc out of the DVD-RAM cartridge? A: Only Type II DVD-RAM cartridges allow you to remove the DVD-RAM disc from the cartridge. Furthermore, DVD-RAM discs can only be read by DVD-ROM drives capable of reading DVD-RAM discs. Not all DVD-ROM drives can read DVD-RAM discs. Q: Why do I only get 2.32GB of space on the DVD-RAM cartridge? A: Storage manufacturers commonly measure sizes in mB (millions of bytes) and gB (billions of bytes). However, computer normally manual sizes in MB (1024^2 bytes), and GB (1024^3 bytes). A DVD-RAM cartridge holds 2.6 gB of data, or 2,600,000,000 bytes, which is approximately 2.42 GB of data, but some space is needed for the UDF filesystem. |
